To make sure Club is a great experience for everyone, there are a few things we ask of each person who joins us. These aren’t meant to make Club feel exclusive—they simply help games run smoothly, tables feel welcoming, and every member enjoy her time around the table. Take a moment to read through the expectations below and make sure 205 Mahjong Club feels like the right fit for you.

Player Readiness

205 Mahjong Club is designed for players who can comfortably complete a game of American Mahjong independently using National Mah Jongg League rules. You do not need to be fast or advanced, and occasional rule clarification is completely okay—but Club is a social play environment, not an instructional class.

Before joining, you should be able to:

• Complete the Charleston independently
• Read and navigate the current NMJL card
• Understand exposures, jokers, and dead hands
• Choose and pursue a hand without ongoing assistance
• Complete a full game without continuous rule instruction
• Help keep the game moving at a reasonable table pace

We typically aim to complete approximately four games during our two-hour play period, although the number of games will naturally vary by table.

If you are still learning these skills, we would love to welcome you at Mahjong 101 or Guided Play first. Once you are comfortable playing independently, we’ll be excited to save you a seat at Club!

Community Expectations

205 Mahjong Club is about more than playing the game—it is about creating a welcoming community where everyone has a seat at the table.

Members should be:

• Open to meeting and playing with new people
• Willing to rotate tables and play with a variety of members
• Flexible and respectful when tables agree to different house rules or playing preferences
• Patient and considerate of reasonable differences in playing pace and experience
• On time, since late arrivals reduce everyone’s playing time
• Responsible about notifying us of absences as early as possible
• Prepared with the current NMJL card
• Age 21 or older
